stoner movie

Stoners love a good session, and then a good movie. But it cannot be just any movie. When you’re high, you crave a hearty laugh, an easy-to-follow storyline, and some representation of cannabis culture. Wikipedia even gives “stoner film” its own page. A stoner firm is defined as “a subgenre of comedy film that revolves around the recreational use of cannabis.” Consequently, I will use similar parameters to give you my list of Top 7 Stoner Movies to Watch During Your Next Session.

7. Billy Madison (1995)

Billy Madison may not be considered a stoner movie by Wikipedia’s definition, but it is to me. It has that pee-in-your-pants type of comedy. In fact, it has a quotable “peeing in your pants” line. Adam Sandler has countless memorable quotes in the film. Billy Madison is funny, silly, stupid at times, and entertaining. Other honorable mention Sandler movies to watch while you’re stoned include Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, and The Wedding Singer.

6. Friday (1995)

“I know you don’t smoke weed, I know this, but I’m gonna get you high today, ‘cause it’s Friday, you ain’t got no job, and you ain’t got shit to do.” That pretty much sums up the movie… Ice Cube and Chris Tucker play best friends. The audience follows their hilarious misadventures including crackheads and shoot-outs.

5. Ted (2012)

Ted is a profanity-spewing, bong-hitting teddy bear. Ted and his best friend John, played by Mark Wahlberg, have a codependent and unhealthy relationship that really frustrates John’s girlfriend, played by Mila Kunis. Ted is written and directed by Seth MacFarlane, so you know it’s offensively hilarious.

4. Half Baked (1998)

A group of stoner friends begin selling stolen weed in order to bail their wrongfully-accused friend out of jail. The group smokes copious amounts of weed. Dave Chappelle plays multiple characters in this cult classic.

3. Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)

Harold and Kumar smoke a ton of weed and go on an adventure to the restaurant White Castle. Cannabis and a strong desire for a stack of sliders make this the perfect stoner movie. Insert a jacked-up on ecstasy NPH (Neil Patrick Harris) into the mix and the antics that follow will have you laughing out loud.

2. Pineapple Express (2008)

Two stoners, played by Seth Rogan and James Franco, witness a murder and accidentally leave a joint at scene of the crime. The joint left behind is an extremely rare strain of cannabis called Pineapple Express. The ensuing hijinks and banter between Rogan and Franco will keep you belly-laughing. Other hilarious movies that are written by Judd Apatow include The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up.

1. Dazed and Confused (1993)

A group of high school students in 1976 on their last day and night of school. The movie has lovable characters, pop culture references, humor, partying, and nostalgia. Not only is Dazed and Confused the best stoner movie, it is also one of the greatest movies of all time.

The key component in all of these movies is that nothing is taken too seriously. When stoned, you want to enjoy a lighthearted, belly-laugh-inducing comedy. The more impractical and improbable, the better. Honorable mentions include The Big Lebowski (1998), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), Super Troopers (2001), Grandma’s Boy (2006).
