Jobs and the Cannabis Industry
As the legal cannabis sector continues to grow on a national scale, more and more Americans are flocking to apply for jobs. In fact, there are currently 428,059 full-time equivalent jobs supported by legal cannabis, according to a report from Leafly. In 2021, the cannabis industry boasted an additional 280 jobs per day on average, a 33 percent increase from the previous year. Even better, the cannabis industry can now claim that it has had an annual jobs growth rate over 27 percent for the last five years in a row. Impressive, to say the least.
As employment in legal marijuana explodes, the marketplace is prime to become a major jobs creator on a national level. In fact, last year’s cannabis job growth (over 100,000 jobs) was comparable to the financial sector (145,000 jobs) and the construction sector (165,000), another nod in cannabis’s favor. The truth is that the cannabis industry has only scratched the surface of what it can and will do.
In its new cannabis report, Leafly underlined the fact that “despite the ongoing economic and employment challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, cannabis continues to be the most powerful job creator in America – with no other industry coming close”. With that kind of praise, it’s no wonder Americans are running to get jobs in the industry. There are a handful of states that are leading the charge in growing the cannabis industry, and the number of jobs as a result.

From medical marijuana to recreational marijuana, the country’s sentiment seems to be clear: Americans love cannabis. Providing these people with the resources to that they seek is imperative to keeping the cannabis industry growing and thriving the way it has over the last five years. As the market becomes more legalized, and thus more regulated, it will be interesting to see where the country goes from here.
